What are the major changes in China’s medical sector? Official statistics released

On October 12, the Department of Planning Development and Information Technology of the National Health Commission released the statistical communique on the development of China’s health industry in 2022, which also gave the industry a glimpse of the development of health in 2022. The currently published data and project categories are not as detailed as the annual statistical yearbook. The number of private hospitals continued to grow, while the number of public hospitals continued to decrease.

2. Number of beds (unit: 10,000)

In 2018, public hospital beds accounted for 73.7% and private hospital beds accounted for 26.3%.

In 2022, the public hospital beds accounted for 70.0%, civilian battalion hospital beds accounted for 30.0%.

Private hospitals have increased slightly, but their share is still low.

In 2018, there were 3.05 billion patients’ times to public hospitals (85.2 per cent of the total number of hospitals) and 530 million patients times to private hospitals (14.8 per cent of the total number of hospitals);

In 2022, the number of patients diagnosed and treated in public hospitals reached 3.19 billion (accounting for 83.4% of the total number of patients times diagnosed and treated in hospitals), while the number of patients diagnosed and treated in private hospitals reached 630 million (accounting for 16.6% of the total number of patients times diagnosed and treated in hospitals).
