The National Health Commission clearly requires to strengthen the construction of ICU, ICU related equipment manufacturers are ready?

2022-12-08

On the afternoon of November 17, at the press conference of the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council, the Health Commission stressed the strengthening of capacity-building and classified treatment of patients from three aspects. Firstly, the construction of designated hospitals should be continuously strengthened, and beds for treatment should be fully allocated according to the size of the local population, while ICU beds are required to reach 10% of the total number of beds; secondly, the construction of square cabin hospitals should be strengthened; thirdly, the construction of fever outpatient clinics should be continuously strengthened.
ICU beds are poised for a short-term explosion
The focus at the meeting related to the capital market is to make up for the shortcomings, firstly, to continuously strengthen the construction of designated hospitals; secondly, to strengthen the construction of square cabin hospitals; and thirdly, to continuously strengthen the construction of fever clinics.
The ICU, intensive care, square cabin and other aspects mentioned therein, specifically in the stock market are mainly medical equipment in this section, such as ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps, etc. There is a lot of room for growth.
According to the data, the number of ICU beds in China is 67198 in 2021, and the number of ICU beds per 100, 000 people is only 4.8, which is still more than four times lower than that of the United States in 2018 and Germany in 2017.
In May 2020, the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Health Commission and the Bureau of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly issued the Plan for Building the Capacity of Public Health Prevention, Control and Treatment, which set the target of 2-5%, 5-10% and 10%-15% for the number of ICU beds in county-level hospitals, infectious disease hospitals and major epidemic treatment bases respectively. The number of ICU beds in China has gradually increased from about 110,000 in 2019 to 130,000 in 2021.
According to statistics from local health commissions, there are about 1,500-1,600 designated hospitals for COVID-19 in China. At present, there are about 130,000 ICU beds in China. Based on the total number of 6 million beds in secondary and tertiary hospitals (excluding ICU), the proportion of ICU beds in China is about 2.2%.It is estimated that if the allocation rate are to increase to 10%, 47,000 additional ICU beds would be needed in the country, a significant increase.
Many institutions believe that COVID-19 patients have potential needs for respiratory treatment, and the optimization of domestic epidemic prevention and control plans in the future is expected to boost the demand for a batch of ventilators and oxygen generators, while home ventilators can provide convenient treatment support.
Industry insiders believe that related medical equipment, such as ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps, defibrillators and portable color ultrasound, are expected to usher in a new round of peak purchasing, driving the performance of related companies to continue to grow.
In view of the current epidemic prevention and control background in China, the implementation of various measures, including strengthening the construction of domestic ICU beds, is more urgent than that in 2020, and the demand for ICU beds is expected to break out in the short term.
In the post-epidemic era, medical equipment industry meets the opportunity
Statistics from the National Health Commission show that in the first five months of this year, the total number of visits to medical and health institutions across the country was 2.61 billion, up 0.9 percent year on year, with 1.62 billion visits in hospitals basically unchanged.
Galaxy Securities pointed out that this is mainly reflected in the fact that non-local patients have been blocked from seeking medical treatment and local patients have been delayed in choosing treatment. But now, the optimization of the prevention and control policy is conducive to the recovery of routine medical demand.
AVIC Securities expects that the purchase of medical devices in volume will become the new normal of the industry, and the rules of centralized purchase bidding will also tend to be flexible, and incline to clinical demand – the policy setting of centralized purchase of spinal consumables, electrophysiological centralized purchase and other policies once again shows that centralized purchase is not a blind preference for low prices, but on the premise of ensuring clinical effects, it will reduce channel costs and give reasonable profits to manufacturers. In addition to focusing on the clinical effects of products, it also gives consideration to distribution Supply and other comprehensive capabilities.
