Procurement Competition in China’s Anesthesia Machine Market in 2021

I.The total procurement of anesthesia machines in the first three quarters exceeded 600 million yuan

 In the first three quarters of 2021, a total of 797 bid winning data of anesthesia equipment were collected, involving 623 hospitals and 30 brands. The purchase quantity and total amount were 1743 pieces and 618 million yuan respectively.

Among them, 501 pieces were purchased in the first quarter, with a purchase amount of 200 million yuan; in the second quarter, the purchase amount was 182 million yuan, down 9.00% month on month, but the purchase quantity increased 16.97% month on month to 586 pieces; in the third quarter, the purchase amount increased slightly, reaching 209 million yuan, an increase of 10.99%.

II.Three giants occupy more than 80% of the anesthesia machine market share

According to the disclosed brand and amount data, in the first three quarters of 2021, Mindray ranked first in the number and amount of winning bids, with a total amount of 200 million yuan and 604 winning bids.

In terms of overall market share, Mindray accounted for 33.9%. GE and Draeger healthcare followed with 29.7 per cent and 22.8 per cent respectively. Other brands in anesthesia machine market share only 13.6%.

Mindray anesthesia machine products mainly include A series, WATO series and V60 series anesthesia evaporators. In 2013, Mindray A5 became the first anesthesia machine in China to enter the North American market. According to public data, in 2018, the sales volume of Mindray anesthesia machine reached 7688 units, with a year-on-year increase of 29%, realizing high-speed growth. It is reported that the main export market of Mindray anesthesia machine is the United States. In the new procurement of operating rooms in the United States, there is one Mindray for every 8 anesthesia machines.

It is worth noting that Mindray is still exploring the field of intelligent anesthesia. In April this year, the super high-end anesthesia system of Mindray A9 was officially released, which means that Mindray has made an important breakthrough in all electronic evaporator technology and closed-loop control anesthesia technology. In the future, it remains to be seen whether Mindray can continuously improve the market penetration and share of anesthesia machines through A9 and other products.

 III .The bid winning quantity of GE Carestion 620 and Mindray WATO ex-55 anesthesia machines exceeded 100

In terms of bid-winning product models, GE’s Carestation 620s and Mindray’s WATO EX-55 anaesthesia machines have won the most, both of which have exceeded 100 pieces. In terms of bid-winning amount, Carestation 620 was much higher than other types of products, reaching 74 million yuan; Mindray A7 anesthetic machine ranked second, with a bid-winning amount of 44 million yuan, with a bid-winning number of 93 pieces，and GE’s Carestation-650anesthetic machine won a bid amount of 36 million yuan, with a bid-winning number of 86 piece.

In addition, according to the winning time, Draeger Medical’s PRIMUS was purchased the most in the first quarter, with the winning amount and quantity of 13 million yuan and 20 pieces.

The most was Mindray A7 in the second quarter, with the winning bid amount and quantity of 15 million yuan and 33 pieces.

GE Carestation 620s were the most purchased in the third quarter, with a purchase value of 51 million yuan and a quantity of 114pieces.

 IV.The regions with active anesthesia equipment bidding were mainly concentrated in Guangdong Province, China

According to the bid winning results, the regions with active bidding for anesthesia equipment in the first three quarters of 2021 were mainly concentrated in Guangdong Province, with a purchase amount of 111 million yuan, 45 million yuan in Hebei Province, and third in Sichuan Province, with a purchase amount of 37 million yuan.

In the first three quarters of 2021, the hospital with the highest procurement amount of anesthesia equipment was Meizhou people’s Hospital in Guangdong, with an amount of 12.3 million yuan. The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University and the first people’s Hospital of Shanghai ranked second and third with the purchase amount of 11.8 million yuan and 11.6 million yuan respectively. In terms of procurement quantity, Meizhou people’s hospital still purchases the most anesthesia equipment, with a total of 50 sets.
