Minamata Convention on Mercury
On October 16, 2020, CMDE released a notice of the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. According to the Convention, which entered into force in China on 16 August 2017, stated that the production of mercury-containing thermometers and mercury-containing sphygmomanometers will be banned from 1 January 2026. Therefore, following notice has released by CMDE.
- For mercury-containing thermometers and mercury-containing sphygmomanometers that have obtained the registration certificate of medical devices, the original registration certificate shall remain valid within the validity period of the certificate; Upon expiration of the registration certificate, the applicant may apply for renewal of registration, but the validity period of the registration certificate shall not exceed December 31, 2025.
- Mercury-containing thermometers and mercury-containing sphygmomanometers that have been accepted as medical devices shall continue to be reviewed and approved as medical devices. If the registration is approved, a medical device registration certificate shall be issued, and the validity period of the registration certificate shall not exceed December 31, 2025.
- As of January 1, 2026, the production of mercury-containing thermometers and mercury-containing sphygmomanometers will be banned.
