Current Situation of Medical Imaging Equipment Industry in China
China’s major image manufacturing enterprises and manufacturing capacity:
Representative enterprises in China’s medical imaging industry include WDM, Neusoft,Mindary, United Imaging and other industry leaders. In terms of products, they can produce 64 rows and above of CT, 3.0T MRI, DSA, PET/CT and other high-end products. In the field of low-end products, domestic enterprises have achieved import substitution. In the field of medium and high-end products, “GPS” (GE, Philips and Siemens) have dominated the market for a long time.
In terms of core parts, some core parts, including X-ray ball tube of CT, high-voltage generator, Mr superconducting magnet, Dr plate detector, etc., still rely on imports.
Industry scale:
According to CIC estimates, China’s medical imaging market size was approximately $53.7 billion in 2020 (2015-2020 CAGR 12%) and is expected to be close to $110 billion in 2030, with an estimated CAGR of 7.3% from 2020-2030. By product: CT accounts for the highest proportion in the entire imaging market (17.3 billion, accounting for about 32%), followed by XR (12.4 billion, accounting for about 23%), ultrasound (9.9 billion, accounting for about 19%) and MRI (8.9 billion, about 17%).
Status of allocation rate:
In terms of industry growth rate, the domestic growth rate from 2015 to 2020 was significantly higher than the global growth rate (from 2015 to 2020, the domestic and global growth rates of MRI and CT were 8.0% vs 4.4% and 21.8% vs 5.7%, respectively) , but the allocation rate is significantly different from that of developed countries: China’s per capita DR possession is 50 units/million people, ultrasound is 171 units/million people, MR is about 8 units/million people, CT is about 19 units/ million people, DSA is about 4.3 units/million people, and PET/CT is about 0.6 units/million people.
Policy environment (Hierarchical diagnosis and treatment and encouraging private-run hospitals):
Hierarchical diagnosis and treatment: The core purpose is to gradually sink medical resources and attract patients to choose primary medical institutions for treatment. At present, the equipment level of primary medical institutions in China is low, and the gradual promotion of hierarchical diagnosis and treatment stimulates the demand for new and updated equipment, which will become an important driving factor for the growth of China’s low-end equipment market. Privite -run hospitals: In May 2017, the State Council issued the Opinions of the General Office of the State Council on Supporting Privite Forces to Provide Multi-level and Diversified Medical Services, which mentioned that “the planning reservation space for privite- run medical institutions to allocate large medical equipment can be reasonably relaxed.” ; in 2021, the General Office of the NHC issued the Notice on Printing and Distributing the Implementation Plan for the Reform of Separating certificates from Licenses for the Allocation of Large Medical Equipment in Privitely-run Medical Institutions.
