Attention! China’s first “general dictionary” for the ventilator industry officially released

2025-09-24

China’s first “general dictionary” for the ventilator industry has been officially released! Respiratory physicians no longer need to spend time “translating” the “terminology” from different manufacturers, and users of home ventilators can also get started with the equipment more quickly.

Recently, GB/T 46008-2025 “Terms and Definitions for Ventilators and Related Equipment” (ISO 19223) (referred to as the “Standard”), which is supervised by the National Medical Products Administration and under the jurisdiction and guidance of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Anesthesia and Respiratory Equipment (TC116), has been officially released. It will come into effect on August 1, 2026, and this is China’s first authoritative terminology standard in the field of ventilators.

The release of this document means that the previously chaotic and vaguely defined terminology system for domestic ventilators will be effectively unified.

As an industry leader with the second-highest sales volume of household ventilators in the world and the highest in China, BMC has deeply participated in the formulation of this standard.

Most of the terms used in China’s ventilator industry originate from early foreign-introduced terminology. With the development of ventilator technology and ventilation modes in recent years, the involved terminology has been continuously expanding, and their meanings have also been constantly changing. This has resulted in a long-standing lack of a set of recognized and authoritative terminology standards in our country. Manufacturers, clinical medical staff, and researchers have a large number of ambiguous expressions and differences in understanding during communication and collaboration. This not only affects technical exchanges, equipment research and development, and training and education, but also may hidden dangers to patients’ clinical safety.

Establishing a scientific, systematic, and widely recognized terminology system has become an urgent need to ensure patient safety and industry development. With the release of the “Standard”, this situation is expected to be significantly improved.

It is reported that the “Standard” has, for the first time, systematically established a terminology system in China’s ventilator field, covering key dimensions such as basic concepts, working principles, equipment parameters, ventilation modes, respiratory waveforms, alarm settings, and clinical applications.

“Although it is a technical terminology standard, its fundamental purpose is to standardize ‘behavior’ by standardizing ‘language’.It lays a standardized foundation for improving the safety, reliability, and efficiency of medical processes by unifying the “common language” in the field of ventilators nationwide.

China is encouraging China end uses for more domestic products in latest years. Thus, more and more overseas manufacturers are planning localization in China.
