Analysis on the Ecological Situation of Medical Device Industry in China’s Three Major Urban Agglomerations in 2021

By the end of 2021, the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration has the largest number of colleges and universities offering medical device related majors, with a total of 103; Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration and Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Dawan District ranked second and third, with 53 and 32 universities respectively. From the perspective of the ratio of colleges and universities to enterprises (that is, the ratio of the number of colleges and universities to the number of production enterprises, which reflects the support of colleges and universities to the development of enterprises to a certain extent), the ratio of colleges and universities to enterprises in the urban agglomeration of the Yangtze River Delta is the highest, which is 1.50%; The ratios of universities and enterprises in Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration and Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Dawan district were 1.14% and 0.47% respectively.

With rich university resources, the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration and Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration have respectively established the “Yangtze River Delta Medical Education Alliance” and the “Beijing University Alliance for the cultivation of outstanding medical talents” with the theme of medical education.

According to the statistics of Zhongcheng digital department, by the end of 2021, the number of class III hospitals in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration had totaled 248; the number of third class hospitals in Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration and Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Dawan district is 193 and 123 respectively. In August 2021, Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Guangzhi group on “smart medical and life health base in Dawan District, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao”.

Carrying out professional service construction

According to the statistics of Zhongcheng department, by the end of 2021, there have been 146 medical device inspection institutions in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, ranking first among the three places; the number of medical device third-party logistics institutions in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao is much higher than that in the other two places, with a total of 126; the number of medical device CROS(medical contract research organizations) in Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration is the largest, with a total of 55; the number of CDMOS (Pharmaceutical contract R & D and production organizations) for medical devices in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is 25.

In order to promote industrial development, relevant departments of local governments have led the construction of professional service projects.

In July 2021, Zhejiang Food and Drug Administration signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Haining Municipal People’s government to jointly build the “Yangtze River Delta Medical Device Testing, Evaluation and Innovation Service Complex”, focusing on building “two centers, one station and one platform”, namely public health emergency materials (medical devices) testing center, medical device biosafety center, medical innovation and evaluation flexible service station Innovative service platform for the whole life cycle of medical devices.

High degree of industrial agglomeration

According to statistics from Zhongcheng Digital, by the end of 2021, the number of industrial clusters in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration have been 291, 157 and 121 respectively. Among them, although the number of industrial agglomeration areas in Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration is less than that in other two places, the agglomeration degree of production enterprises ranks first among the three places, and about 79.11% of production enterprises are located in the agglomeration area;the agglomeration degree of production enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration and Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Dawan district are 77.44% and 56.54% respectively.

It is worth noting that with the active capital market and fully flowing production factors, the number of production enterprises in Shenzhen high tech Industrial Park has reached 401, which is much higher than that in other agglomeration areas.

Proportion of financing quantity:

According to the statistics of Zhongcheng digital department, in 2021, medical device enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration and Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Dawan district obtained financing (including primary market and IPO) 253 times, accounting for 81.35% of the total financing in the field of medical devices in China.

From the perspective of financing categories, the financing in the field of medical devices in China’s three major urban agglomerations in 2021 is dominated by primary market financing. Among them, the number of primary market financing in the urban agglomeration of the Yangtze River Delta is as high as 137, 57 in the Great Bay area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and 34 in the urban agglomeration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

In terms of financing amount, the financing in the field of medical devices in the three urban agglomerations is mainly 100 million yuan. The number of 100 million yuan financing in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Dawan district and Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban agglomeration was 71, 21 and 17 respectively, which were higher than the local 10 million yuan financing.

In terms of financing, the financing of medical device industry in Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration and Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Bay area is mainly concentrated in the field of in vitro diagnosis, while the financing of Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban Agglomeration is mainly concentrated in the field of medical software.
